“Waterlife” Documentary – Free Screening at NFB on June 1st

This movie looks like a “must see.” The director, Kevin McMahon has directed some amazing documentaries, including one of my favorites, “McLuhan’s Wake” – a doc on the Canadian media communications theorist Marshall McLuhan.

Iconic Towers: What do the CN Tower and Burj Khalifa Represent?

"World's Tallest" Illustration by Strongandfree.ca

From our old building  we could see, through a sliver of highrises, Toronto’s downtown and the CN Tower. Now we look west to the green canopy of the west end and if we peer south from the balcony edge we have a view of the immensity of High Park, [...]

China Promoting Itself to the World with Art and Artist's Districts

Art by a Chinese artist named Liu Bolin. He specializes in camouflage painting. His work challenges us to think about identity and ambiguity in contemporary Chinese society. Click to view larger image.

It’s no secret that China has long been the world’s factory and is increasingly looking to change its position from that of producer to [...]

Italian dialect disappearing from Toronto

Today in the Toronto Star there is an interesting article on the disappearance of “Italiese,” a Toronto-specific dialect of Italian that was spoken frequently a generation ago. The article touches on the larger issue of global language extinction and ponders what the relationship of language is to culture and how, internationally, societies become increasingly homogeneous as the [...]

Paint Your Faith – United Church and Toronto's Newest Mega Graffiti Mural

Recently Sam Javanrouh, the excellent Toronto photoblogger who specializes in interesting landscapes, street scenes and buildings, shot a pic that blew me away. I couldn’t figure out where it was. Turns out it was a work commissioned by the United Church. The scale is phenomenal. The three story mural awaits your perusal at Church and [...]

Canada scores a "B" – What it means to be "strong and free"

Often I ponder Canada and what it means, to quote our national anthem, to be “strong and free.” Of course, many will note that “strong and free” is in fact a marketing slogan for me and my services/products, and my main domain is ”strongandfree.ca.” I’m an entrepreneur and a patriot, that goes without saying. But I’m [...]

Niagara Bike Train – An ideal weekend getaway!

Last summer, my partner booked us on a novel trip—we traveled to Niagara aboard the “bike train” for its inaugural voyage. It was a cool experience.

We arrived at Union Station in the morning, after biking through a misty High Park and along the lakeshore. The press was in full effect, and it seemed half the [...]

City in Bloom – High Park and Green Roofs Initiative

It’s around this time that I start to think about summer weather and getting out and about, taking some new crosstown walks, tuning up the bike, and generally exploring Toronto as it bursts into spring. The eastern forest of North America is one of the most verdant areas on earth – once it finishes [...]

Wired on HBO Series – "Way down in the hole" theme rocks!

My comp art from TV series "The Wire"

I often claim that I’m not much of a TV watcher – aside from a Saturday night hockey game or interesting doc on TVO or Newsworld. Truth is, that all changed when I got hooked on “Northern Exposure” about 8 years ago. I saw almost the entire [...]

Congratulations Spacing – Toronto's Urban Affairs Mag is 5!

Spacing magazine's 5th anniversary and biggest issue yet!

In yesterday’s Metro newspaper there was an article on the crew that founded ‘Spacing,’ Toronto’s innovative public space magazine. Matthew Blackett and Dale Duncan are two of the founding editors and they are very deserving of all the praise and awards that have come Spacing’s way. As [...]
