Greetings. As some of you know I have been employed in a wide variety of ESL and Education positions in the last decade. I have worked as a full-time private ESL school instructor, an occasional LINC/ESL teacher, and a TESL trainer. In addition I was fortunate enough to also work as a computer lab assistant with Centennial College, which gave me insights into English for Academic Purposes and technologies in post-secondary schools.
The topic of employment is a frequent thread in the CCLCS Call workshops so I am soliciting feedback from former students and educators in Toronto/GTA as to the current state of affairs, particularly for employment as an ESL teacher, whether that is in a LINC, private ESL school or college/university. Recently, in addition to traditional posts, a range of opportunities in areas like ELT, and OSLT (Occupation Specific Language Training). We also know that some organizations have received cutbacks and may experience a hiring freeze.
What has been your experience? Can you offer any advice? (Job boards, specific openings, expected pay rates, tutoring or alternative work?).
Posts are moderated. Thanks in advance for your contribution.
If you are just starting out in your job search or are looking for immediate employment in Toronto, English Central has a job board that lists private schools that have begun summer recruitment. Positions may only be available for July-August, but private schools have a young demographic and can be fun places to work for a few months. There are other links as well. Check it out.
