What is a website? What is a blog? How are they different?
It goes without saying that a website is a place on the Internet, identified by an address (URL) that can contain a combination of text, images, audio, video and animation. Pages of sites are joined to other pages by hyperlinks. Web servers power all of this content. Websites are often sales tools or take on an informational or instructional role. The old web was static – pages didn’t change often and people often relied on traditional media for their news.
A blog is a website. A website though is definitely not always a blog. Though tens of thousands of new blogs are created daily, and millions of “web logs” have already been published, they remain a little mysterious. You may have heard of the famous celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, or read a sports blog on ESPN or on the Food Network. but you may not really understand the concept and what kind of technology is going on behind the scenes. Well, it’s time for some “tech know.”
The main difference between a regular website and a blog are the blog “posts” which are also known as the content in RSS feeds (RSS is a publishing system and stands for Really Simple Syndication). These days the lines between the two are blurring. One of the most popular blogging platforms is called WordPress. (This site was created with WP and also contains a blog). WordPress is the most-used and perhaps most famous of a half-dozen famous blogging tools. Read more about different blog platforms (opens new window).
